Domain 2: Governance and Leadership

Rosary Academy was founded in September 1965 under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and administered by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange to provide greater opportunity for girls residing in the central and northeastern portions of Orange County to attend a Catholic secondary school.  In 1976, with the establishment of the Diocese of Orange, Rosary came under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange.  Presently, Rosary is also under the supervision of the Vicar of Faith Formation/Superintendent of Catholic Schools.  Students now represent a broader geographic range that includes the counties of Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino.

The Rosary Academy Consultative School Board, in conjunction with the Office of Catholic Schools, mission is to further the advancement of excellence in Catholic school education for students at Rosary Academy by providing leadership, direction, and support. The functions of the Consultative School Board are to:

  • Be consultative to the Head of School on policies, programs, and services for Rosary Academy.

  • The development and regular updating of a 3-5 year plan for the school; annual goal setting for the School and for the Board.  The long-range plan should follow the guidelines of the Office of Catholic Schools and Rosary Academy.

  • Conduct special studies and assignments as requested by the Head of School.

  • The formulation and implementation of an Advancement program for the school, following Archdiocesan guidelines, and in cooperation with the Office of Catholic Schools.

  • Adopting the school’s operational budget, according to the format specified by the Office of Catholic Schools; receiving periodic reports from the Head of School on the implementation of the budget.

The board meets at least five times a year.

Finance, advancement, and investment committees were developed as standing committees to support the work of the school and the consultative board.  These committees meet every other month or as needed.

Schoolwide Workshops and Training

All teachers new to Rosary participate in our Rosary Mentoring/Coaching Program:

All new teachers to Rosary Academy are expected to participate in the mentoring program. The program affords those new to Rosary to learn more about our curriculum, best practices, culture, charism, and school traditions. Those who are new to teaching must participate in the program for at least 2 years. The program will work on teaching pedagogy and current teaching practices. Year two is a coaching program whereby department chairs, mentor teachers, and administrators act as coaches to improve teacher performance and practice.

Teachers that attend professional development opportunities outside of Rosary are expected to present what they learned to the entire faculty and staff upon their return.

Requirements for ongoing professional development

Rosary policy regarding professional growth can be found in our Faculty and Staff handbook on page 15.

Professional Growth
Each teacher has a serious responsibility to continue to grow professionally and to become familiar with tried and approved educational techniques and teaching methodologies. Each teacher should subscribe to their professional organization and keep current with all the latest trends in curriculum and instruction.

The Diocese requires all teachers to have at least seventy-five (75) hours of professional growth every 3 years. This is necessary for advancement on the salary scale. Teachers fill out professional growth forms, take them to their Department Chair for their signature, and then return them to the Head of School or Assistant Head of School for signature. They are then given a signed copy, and a copy is placed in their Professional Growth file and their Personnel file. Records are maintained by the Executive Assistant to the Principal/AHOS. Twenty (20) hours should be in technology-based instruction, twenty-five (25) in the teacher’s field specialty, and the other hours may be used outside the teacher’s area of teaching responsibility. Thirty (30) hours may be awarded for a WCEA/WASC visit. This includes any pre-visits, workshops, etc.,  pertaining to the WCEA/WASC visit.
